? Dutch chemist Dr Franciscus Sylvius purportedly created gin at the University of leyden in the mid-sixteen century. He called it genievre , for juniper in French and declared it an attempt to enhance the therapeutic properties of juniper in a medicinal beverage.
English soldiers fighting in the Netherlands adopted the taste for gin, which they called “Dutch courage” The production of gin London was encouraged by King William the III to fill the void created when he banned French imports, including wine and spirits. As a result, gin production soared from a half million gallons in 1690 to 18 million gallons in 1710.l.
There are two basic styles in the production of gin, and perhaps the most famous of the two is London dry gin, in the flavor of this type completely dominates juniper gin.
The other style is “Plymouth style” and is quite different from other gins, the difference in composition of herbs and used for the production of extremely soft water.This type of gin stands with an extremely mild taste and deep flavor.
This gin can be produced only in southwest British city of Plymouth. This is the only gin with a geographical indication, like wine, it still produces a recipe from the 18th century and in the original distillation from the same period.
There is a third style. This is a “Dutch style “. It makes the original Dutch technology four centuries ago, but apart from that with modern methods it is much better handled
Today, gin is made around the world, but the London Dry style is considered the benchmark.
