50ml. Rye whiskey
25ml. Sweet vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Garnish: orange zest or maraschino cherry

Add the ingredients to a shaker filled with ice and shake. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, add the garnish, and serve.

In the 1870’s, Winston Churchill’s mother was hosting a party for then presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden. This cocktail was created especially for the banquet and it was a big hit.

Mr. Tilden wound up losing the election but his party drink became famous. People started asking for the drink by the name of the club where the party was held, The Manhattan Cocktail.
